Fanning Island
D Shook
This one port is not worth the time it takes to get there. Our ship took 2
days each way, and had very little to do except sunbathing and bingo. We
tried snorkeling, but if you want to see anything neat here you should go
diving. It's just too deep otherwise, and being out in the ocean instead
of inside a reef make it a rough trip. The sun is extremely powerful and
you will get burned, very badly if you're not careful. Regarding the
people, they are very nice, but seldom speak English except to negotiate
prices of their crafts. The island has no stores, only an open air market
where they sell shell or wood crafts they make themselves. You can barter,
but honestly, I didn't have the heart. I got a very nice shell bowl for
$20. Most necklaces run between $1 and $5. I liked the beach, but this is
not a resort, it's a remote island, so don't expect any place to shower.
Food is provided by the cruise line, as there is no electricity. The water
is not potable, so drink the bottles provided by the ship. While a unique
trip, and a pretty beach, I was left with a feeling of remorse and sadness
regarding the poverty in which the locals live. I will say that other
people really enjoyed themselves, but we can't suntan, so for us, it was
not a good stop.
